How to Reach Varanasi Ghats

Arriving by train or plane? Here's how to get from the station or airport to the ghats — and where to board your boat.

Travel Guide

Varanasi's ghats are in the old city, along the western bank of the Ganga. Vehicles can reach some ghats directly; for others, the last stretch is on foot through narrow lanes.

From Varanasi Junction (Cantt) Railway Station

  • To Dashashwamedh Ghat: about 5 km, 20–30 minutes by taxi or auto. Vehicles usually stop near Godowlia; walk the last stretch.
  • To Assi Ghat: about 6–7 km, 25–35 minutes.

From Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (Babatpur)

The airport is about 25 km from the city — roughly 45–60 minutes to the ghats by taxi, depending on traffic.

Getting Around the Ghats

  • Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are the easiest way to move between areas.
  • Between neighbouring ghats, walking along the river is often fastest.
  • Roads around Godowlia are very crowded in the evening and on festival days.

Easiest Ghats to Reach by Car

Assi Ghat, Ravidas Ghat and Namo Ghat have the best road access — ideal for families and boat pickups. See which ghat to board from.
